How To Cool Pool

How to Make Pool Water Cooler

During a mid-summer heat wave, you may dream of jumping into a cool and refreshing pool. Some pools heat up during these temperature spikes, resulting in water that’s close to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Luckily, there are several options for lowering the temperature of your pool water, such as:

Aerators

Aerators are attachments you can plug or screw onto the side of your pool, which collects water and then shoots this water back out in a stream to add more oxygen. This increase of oxygen in the water allows heat to escape through evaporation to lower the temperature by a few degrees.

Fountains and Waterfalls

Fountains and waterfalls operate similarly to aerators by increasing the amount of oxygen in your water for higher rates of heat evaporation. In addition to offering practical benefits, fountains and waterfalls are a great way to increase the aesthetic value of your pool.

Drain and Refill

Partially draining and refilling your pool is a great way to lower the temperature of your pool water, especially if your water is from a well. If you choose to use this method, make sure you rebalance the chemicals in your pool.

Shade the Pool

Adding some shade is a great way to prevent your pool water from becoming too hot. You can plant some trees on the west side for natural shade options or install shade sails, umbrellas or a shade structure over the water.

Can You Put Dry Ice in a Swimming Pool?

You may think about throwing ice into your pool, specifically dry ice. However, ice and dry ice are impractical methods of cooling down a pool as you would need large amounts of regular ice to cool your pool a few degrees, and dry ice can damage your pool’s chemistry and cause health risks.

Dry ice is solid carbon dioxide that reverts to gas after exposure to water. Since dry ice is so cold, you can only handle it with gloves to avoid frostbite on the exposed skin. Carbon dioxide gas is also extremely dangerous as it will hang above the water where a swimmer’s head is and can lead to unconsciousness.
